Oral History Library Now Open

Jun 5, 2024

As of May 2024, the museum has launched an oral history project in partnership with StoryCorps. The Mitford Oral History Library preserves the rich histories of the NC foothills and beyond. The museum offers all visitors as well as the general public the opportunity to record their stories for posterity through the StoryCorps Archive and the Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Explore our first few interviews at the StoryCorps Archive. Then sign up to record your own at The Mitford Museum.

When you make an oral history recording, we’ll have a facilitator on hand to ensure that everything goes smoothly. We’ll welcome you to our dedicated recording room, make you comfortable, and record your story. Plan to spend about an hour with us. Typically, recordings are made by you and a friend or family member, but we can also make solo recordings. Give us a call at 828-572-4898 if you have any questions.

The Mitford Museum

The Mitford Museum is North Carolina’s newest literary landmark.

Founded by #1 New York Times bestselling author, Jan Karon, the museum's mission is to advance the common good through literacy, creativity, and community. Often called Jan’s ‘book without covers,’ the museum is a place of common ground, where people from varied backgrounds can come together to feel welcomed, cared for, and at home.
