Summer Break for Educators
JAN’S LIFE WAS CHANGED BY A TEACHER
Her name was Nan Downs. She taught first grade at Hudson School, in the building that’s now the Hudson Arts Center and home to The Mitford Museum.
Jan’s first love was drawing, which she was busily doing when Ms. Downs stopped by Jan’s desk. ‘It was a picture of Dick and Jane,’ says Jan. ‘Ms. Downs looked at my earnest attempt and said, ‘Why, Janice Wilson, that’s wonderful! May I take it up the hall and show the other teachers?’
‘No one had ever noticed or encouraged my drawing. I was absolutely thrilled, and took her encouragement to heart. I do think that incident was life-changing.’
To honor educators like Ms. Downs, The Mitford Museum is hosting a month-long celebration of teachers. This includes:
Free museum admission for educators during the month of June.
An opportunity for visitors to write the names of their favorite teachers on the chalkboard in the Family Room.
Nominations for the Nan Downs Award for Inspiring Educators with a prize package for the winner. Details for nominating your favorite educator are coming soon!
