Celebrating Librarians
JAN’S LIFE WAS CHANGED BY A LIBRARIAN
I was in Lenoir with my grandfather and asked if I could walk to the library. Reluctant, he stood at the street corner and watched me cross. I had never before crossed a street with a stoplight.
The library seemed as vast as a cathedral. After a bout of feeling mute and overwhelmed, I tried to use the Dewey Decimal system—but it was beyond me. The whole experience was too enormous; I was close to tears.
‘My dear,’ said the librarian. ‘I think I know just what you’re looking for.’
She handed me two books: Lorna Doone and Girl of the Limberlost. The sound of their titles, spoken in her whispery voice, is unforgettable.
I ran across the street to First Methodist Church and sat on the steps and opened Lorna Doone to the first page and fell…
totally,
madly,
helplessly,
in love
with reading,
with words,
with books
-forever.
